The Approach

Fitness for Hikers

Hiking up a mountain is a different sport than walking on flat ground — and most people arrive at the trailhead underprepared for it. The Approach changes that. Eight sessions over four weeks, designed specifically for the demands of mountain terrain.

Beginners Welcome.

No gym experience required. The program starts gently and builds at your pace. Abby coaches form every session — you will never feel out of your depth.

Four Weeks.

Then the Trail.

Week 1 — Ease In

Two sessions a week: Tuesdays focus on strength and endurance, Thursdays on aerobic circuits and core. Week one keeps the load light so you build the movement patterns first.

Week 2 — Build

Same rhythm, more load. Weights step up on strength days, intensity climbs on cardio days. Your tracking sheet starts showing real progress.

Week 3 — Trail-Specific Push

Heavier loads, lower reps. Circuits lean into what climbing and descending real terrain actually asks of your body — legs, lungs, and lateral stability.

Week 4 — Peak & Taper

One final hard session, then a deliberate taper so you arrive at the trailhead rested, sharp, and ready to move.

Trail Day — The Payoff

A guided day hike in the mountains with Playwest. You've earned it. We handle everything — just show up and move.

Meet Abby.

Abby is a certified personal trainer who spends her weekends on the trails — which means the programming she builds is grounded in what mountain terrain actually demands of your body.

She has coached athletes from first-time hikers to ultra-marathon runners. Her approach is direct, encouraging, and built around real progress — not just showing up.

The program culminates in a guided trail day with Playwest. We handle the logistics — permits, route selection, safety systems, and a proper mountain lunch. You just show up and move.

This is what four weeks of preparation feels like when it all comes together on a ridge above the treeline.

  • Location: Endeavor Fitness, Invermere BC + trail day in the Purcells or Rockies
  • Duration: Four weeks — 8 coached sessions (Tues & Thurs) + guided trail day
  • Group size: Small group. Intentionally limited so Abby can coach every rep.
  • Fitness level: All levels welcome. The program scales to where you are.
  • What to bring: Gym shoes, water bottle, and a willingness to work. We provide the rest.
